Malaysia Take Three Titles

Malaysia assert their dominance in the World Masters Super Series Finals on Sunday after claiming three titles for the second consecutive time.

Defending champions Lee Chong Wei and Chin Eei Hui-Wong Pei Tty successfully retained their men’s singles and women’s doubles titles respectively with straight set wins.

However, the star of the day is definitely singles shuttler Wong Mew Choo who produced a brilliant comeback in her badminton career by winning her first title after two years at the Bandaraya Stadium.

The Malaysian shuttler took 35 minutes to beat Germany’s Juliane Schenk 21-15, 21-7 to take her well deserved title.

Mew Choo struggled a little as Schenk took command from the start to lead 9-5. But the Malaysian lass regained her composure, taking seven consecutive points to claim the first set 21-15.

Trailing to Mew Choo by seven points in the second set, Schenk looked like she was physically fatigued. However, she kept on playing as the home crowd cheered her on.

Mew Choo took advantage of this to wear Schenk down, and as she took the winning point to claim her first ever World Masters Super Series title, tears trickled to signal her joy as the Ipoh lass ran over to hug a delighted Misbun Sidek.

In the women’s doubles, Eei Hui-Pei Tty chalked a 21-17, 21-14 win over Kamilla Rytter Juhl-Lena Frier Kristiansen of Denmark to take their second World Masters title in as many years.

In the final match of the day, world number one Lee Chong Wei was clearly a class above his opponent Park Sung Hwan of Korea.

Chong Wei never let Sung Hwan take the lead, and finished off the game with a 21-17, 21-17 win to bring an air of confidence and positive momentum to Laos.

In the men’s doubles, Korean duo Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae took the crown after beating Denmark’s Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen with a 21-15, 21-15 scoreline.

The mixed doubles was taken by Denmark, after Joachim Fischer Nielsen-Christinna Pedersen chalked a 21-14, 21-18 win over India’s V. Diju-Jwala Gutta -stadiumastro
